Series 1-5, 8-14, and 19-20 of Record Group 56-27 consist of financial ledgers of the Michigan State Prison for the years 1839-1892. The ledgers cover a variety of financial matters including cash received and expended; accounts with individuals and governmental units; expenditures for equipment and supplies; cash received and spent by convicts; receipts from convict labor; and a ledger of broom sales.

The Michigan State Prison (also known as Jackson Prison) was established by law in Jackson, Michigan in 1838. The prison changed its name to the State Prison of Southern Michigan in 1935. The prison closed on January 4, 2002. The prison was under the jurisdiction of the Michigan Department of Corrections, which was established in 1937.
